Harvard University. The idea of studying at Harvard College is a dream for many, and I never thought I would have the opportunity to pursue education there. My family couldn’t afford the steep tuition costs, and being an international student added another layer of complexity.
However, a turning point came when I received a newsletter about scholarship opportunities for Polish individuals to study in the US. Intrigued, I applied to several universities listed in the newsletter, including Harvard. It was a shot in the dark, and I didn’t expect a response, especially since I was traveling in Israel at the time.
To my surprise, a few months later, I received an acceptance letter to an MBA program. While the school wasn’t my ideal choice (I’ll refrain from naming it here), it was still an MBA program in the US. Unfortunately, the scholarship granted was only partial, making it financially challenging. Regrettably, I had to decline the opportunity. At that point, I decided to let go of the idea of studying in the US and instead aimed to secure a job there under a work and travel visa.

Facilities at Harvard University
The most prominent structure at Harvard College is arguably its library. The Widener Library stands impressively in the Harvard Yard and is, in my opinion, the largest library I have ever visited. It became a frequent study spot for us, especially during hot days when staying in our dorms was less appealing, and the library provided a welcome escape with its effective air conditioning.
Navigating the library’s basement could be a bit disorienting, and there were moments of unintentional surprise for others when moving around book stacks. Nonetheless, Widener Library held a special place for us.
Despite the grandeur of Widener, I often opted for the art history library as it was less crowded. However, as evening approached, being alone in the basement became somewhat eerie, perhaps exacerbated by the influence of horror films depicting scenarios of being trapped in a library.
Harvard College features a statue of its founder proudly positioned in the yard. During the summer, numerous visitors come to the statue and, according to legend, touching its foot ensures eventual admission to the university. Ironically, John Harvard was not the actual founder, and the depicted man in the statue is not him but rather an anonymous figure.
Another iconic structure at Harvard is Annenberg Hall, reminiscent of the dining hall from the Harry Potter movies (although those were filmed at Oxford College). Visitors and summer students can dine there, as students in the dorms lack accessible kitchens.
I must note that the food at Annenberg Hall was the best I’ve ever had on any campus. The extensive variety ensured everyone could find something to suit their preferences, whether it be meat, fish, vegetarian, low-fat, halal, gluten-free, or any other dietary preference. Additionally, every Sunday offered the opportunity to try your hand at making waffles imprinted with the Harvard seal!
